British Council launches the UK Summer School Competition 2014

Join now for a summer school experience that will last a lifetime

As the United Kingdom’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, the British Council works with UK higher education institutions to continue to position the UK as a top study destination. With this ambition, the British Council launches the UK Summer School Competition 2014 (“the Competition”), providing an opportunity for five Hong Kong senior high school students aged 17 or above to attend a participating summer school in the UK this year.

With an  aim to enable Hong Kong students to better understand the UK’s advantages as a place to find knowledge and inspiration, students are required to submit an essay in English which is no longer than 800 words to join the Competition, explaining “Who or what from the UK inspires you the most and why?”. High-profile Hong Kong personalities are invited to be judges of the competition, which offers a summer school experience that will last a lifetime.

Sophia Chan-Combrink, Head of Education and Society at British Council, said, “Currently, around 10,000 Hong Kong students are enrolled at UK universities. The good quality, high international reputation, cultural diversity, and interesting English speaking environment that UK universities offer have been attracting some of the best Hong Kong students. We believe that the Competition will drive more students to consider pursing further education in the UK and at a result strengthening the link between Hong Kong and the UK.”

The best five entries will be sponsored with flights by the British Airways, accommodation, and tuition fees to travel to the UK and study one of the summer schools courses available at a participating UK university, including Aberystwyth University, University of East Anglia, University of Leeds, SOAS, University of London, and University of Stirling, in June to August this year.

Application is open now until 19 May 2014. Grab the golden opportunity for an exciting summer school experience in the UK and immerse yourself in the fascinating UK culture. Entries and enquiries can be sent to competition@britishcouncil.org.hk. For more information, please visit www.educationuk.org/hongkong.

About the British Council

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. We create international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and build trust between them worldwide.

We work in more than 100 countries and our 7,000 staff – including 2,000 teachers – work with thousands of professionals and policy makers and millions of young people every year by teaching English, sharing the Arts and delivering education and society programmes.

We are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter. A core publically-funded grant-in-aid provides less than 25 per cent of our turnover, which last year was £781m. The rest of our revenues are earned from services which customers around the world pay for, through education and development contracts and from partnerships with public and private organisations. All our work is in pursuit of our charitable purpose and supports prosperity and security for the UK and globally.
