UK Summer School Competition offers Hong Kong students to study at UK institutions
Five students receive round-trip sponsorships from Hong Kong to the UK and study opportunities at designated UK summer schools with accommodation

21 November 2016 (HONG KONG) – The British Council is organising the UK Summer School Competition for the third time. Five Hong Kong senior secondary, pre-university, or college students aged 16 or above will be awarded the opportunity to take part in different summer courses at colleges and universities in the UK, gaining first-hand experience of studying in the country.

To encourage participants to showcase their creativity, students can submit their entries in the form of an essay, or in a variety of other creative media in English, such as a website, a video or a blog, all based on the theme of ‘What would you do if you could spend a day in the life of your favourite UK celebrity, icon, historical figure or fictional character?’. The five winners will receive a sponsorship package that comprises a round-trip ticket from Hong Kong to the UK sponsored by Emirates Airline and a place of study at a designated UK summer school with accommodation at one of the following UK institutions: Chelsea Independent College, Concord College, the University of East Anglia, the University of Edinburgh and SOAS, the University of London.

‘We were grateful to send highly-enthusiastic Hong Kong students to the UK for a summer school experience that would last for a lifetime in previous years. All of them were deeply attracted to the UK by the good quality, cultural diversity, and interesting learning environments for which its education has been famous, and some of them went on to apply to UK universities for their undergraduate education. We look forward to seeing more students demonstrating their exceptional creativity this year for an unforgettable summer school experience in the UK,’ said Sophia Chan-Combrink, Head of Education and Society, British Council, Hong Kong.

Jose Lee from Diocesan Girls’ School, one of the winners of the 2015 summer school competition, learnt to be more independent after the trip. ‘I came to know myself better during this trip, with some self-discovery that could only be afforded without being under a parent’s watchful gaze. I am now more confident of my strengths, and will strive to work harder on my weaknesses. Being in a foreign country without the comfort of familiarity has made me more independent, and more experienced in dealing with logistics. Planning ahead and organizing were other soft skills I polished, and this experience has taught me more than I could ever expect,’ she said.

Applications are now open until 31 January 2017. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to win an experience that will last for a lifetime. For applications and more details on the competition, please visit http://www.educationuk.org/hongkong/articles/summerschoolcompetition/.
