Name: Yu Hang Yau
Institution: University of East Anglia
Course: BSc Actuarial Science
Why did you decide to study Actuarial Science?
Actuarial Science really stood out to me because it is based on a very interesting idea – predicting the future. But I also wanted to become a professional actuary as a career path choice. I feel like it is the perfect balance between career and fun, and so I decided to apply for the Actuarial Science course.
Why did you choose UEA?
I think the course at UEA is great! Thanks to the relatively small class size, you really get a sense of belonging. You also get to know the other students on your course quite well, and in times of need (like exams) you can really help each other out. Thanks to the Orientation Camp that the UEA Hong Kong Society held in the summer before I started, I also got to know quite a few students from Hong Kong before arrival. There is a strong community of Hong Kong students at UEA, so you don't need to worry about being alone in the UK.
What have you enjoyed the most during your time at UEA?
As a Hong Kong national that grew up in the city for all his life, I particularly enjoy the environment that UEA provides - waking up to birds chirping, living beside a lake, surrounded by greenery... without sacrificing too much of the city life. Everything is accessible and the city is just a short bus trip away. There are a lot of different things that can happen in university, but the atmosphere at UEA just makes everything a little bit better.
