Bryan Shen, SOAS, University of London

Name: Bryan Shen
Institution:SOAS, University of London
Course: MA International Studies and Diplomacy

How did you first hear about SOAS?

I first heard of SOAS while attending a higher education fair in Hong Kong. A university in the heart of London, with a multi-cultural student body, and expertise in humanities and social sciences: SOAS matched everything that I was looking for in a university.

What made you choose your current course?

I study international affairs in the Centre of International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD). The practical element of the course is what distinguishes SOAS from other universities. The diverse selection of modules was also enticing, providing me the opportunity to expand my knowledge in topics such as international security and economics.

What is it like being a student in London?

Studying in London has been a wonderful experience. The city provides a balance between work and play. You can make new friends at student-organised events, try out new cuisines, or watch a musical in the West End. The rich history and culture is everywhere – for instance, SOAS is located right next to the British Museum!

What are the highlights of the course?

The major highlight of the course is the CISD study tour to Geneva. We visited the United Nations and took part in seminars relating to disarmament and economic development, plus we were engaged in a day of problem solving, negotiations, and policy making.

What advice would you give to a prospective international student coming to SOAS?

The chance to study in London is simply one you cannot pass up. Grasp as many opportunities as possible during your time at SOAS. The support I have received during my time at SOAS has been tremendous. The diverse atmosphere at SOAS will shape you as a global citizen, and prepare you to embrace an increasingly globalised world.
