The British Council is hosting award-winning UK cellist, Oliver Coates, in Hong Kong, as the Council’s musician-in-residence from 14 November to 23 December, in partnership with renowned local music icon, Kung Chi Shing.
Immersing in and responding to new environments and building new musical relationships locally, Oliver Coates will write new pieces of music which will be performed publicly in China and the UK in 2015. During his residency in Hong Kong, he will also participate in a series of educational workshops at tertiary institutions working with students, and performances, both solo and working collaboratively with Hong Kong musicians.
Sponsored by the PRS for Music Foundation and the British Council, with a mission to stimulate and support the creation and performance of new music, the Musicians in Residence Programme enables five UK musicians to spend six weeks in Hong Kong and four other cities in China, respectively. Oliver was selected for the Programme through expert nomination and interview process.
Oliver Coates also produces electronic music. In 2013, as a solo artist, Oliver Coates performed in China, Russia, Brazil and across Europe, with a repertoire of both cello pieces as well as fusion pieces of cello and electronic music. For more Oliver Coates details: http://www.olivercoates.com/ .
While in Hong Kong, Oliver Coates will also explore the musical underground - musicians or record labels who are hidden, experimental and off the map. Oliver embraces this as a kind of aesthetic widening and equality which he would like to investigate and research in Hong Kong, as well.
