NT Live - Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

Director : David Leveaux
Cast : Daniel Radcliffe, Joshua McGuire and David Haig
Language: English (Chinese subtitles)
Duration: 178 minutes

Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) returns to the stage to star in Tom Stoppard’s brilliantly funny classic Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, with rising theatre star Joshua McGuire (The Hour) and veteran actor David Haig (Four Weddings and a Funeral).

Against the backdrop of Hamlet, two hapless minor characters – Rosencrantz and Guildenstern– take centre stage. As the young double act stumble their way in and out of the action of Shakespeare’s iconic drama, they become increasingly out of their depth as their version of the story unfolds.

The Tony nominated director David Leveaux brings this quickfire comedy back to The Old Vic in London where it first premiered 50 years ago. The play’s nimble wit and linguistic dexterity made a young Tom Stoppard’s name overnight, launching a memorable writing career on stage and screen, which includes the Oscar winning Shakespeare in Love and Joe Wright’s bold reimagining of Anna Karenina.

NT Live - Obsession

Director: Ivo van Hove
Cast: Jude Law, Halina Reijn
Adaptation: Jan Peter Gerrits
Language: English (Chinese subtitles)
Duration: 127 minutes

Jude Law (The Young Pope, The Talented Mr Ripley) stars in a new stage adaptation of Luchino Visconti’s 1943 film, Obsession, directed by the sought-after visionary Ivo van Hove (NT Live: A View from the Bridge).

Gino is a drifter, down-at-heel and magnetically handsome. At a road side restaurant he encounters husband and wife, Giuseppe and Giovanna. Irresistibly attracted to each other, Gino and Giovanna begin a fiery affair and plot to murder her husband. But, in this chilling tale of passion and destruction, the crime only serves to tear them apart.

Visconti’s seminal film gave rise to Italian neorealism, a cinematic movement highlighting the struggles of ordinary people in a time of upheaval. This is Van Hove’s fourth Visconti adaptation and features a company of Dutch and British actors led by Law, whose charismatic stage and screen performances have established him as one of the foremost actors of his generation.

The stage production of Obsession is produced by Barbican Theatre Productions Limited, London and Toneelgroep Amsterdam; co-commissioned by Wiener Festwochen and Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg; co-produced by Holland Festival and David Binder Productions; and supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

NT Live - Yerma

Director: Simon Stone
Cast: Billie Piper, Brendan Cowell
Playwright: Federico García Lorca
Language: English (Chinese subtitles)
Duration: 119 minutes

Billie Piper (Penny Dreadful, Doctor Who) returns to her award winning role in Federico García Lorca’s achingly powerful masterpiece.

In writer-director Simon Stone’s radical production set in contemporary London, this heartbreaking story tells of a young woman driven to the unthinkable by her desperate desire to have a child.

The unmissable theatre phenomenon sold out at London’s Young Vic, receiving universal critical accolades for Piper’s “earth-quaking” (Guardian) performance in its first run in 2016. Her portrayal of Lorca’s heroine built with elemental force to a staggering, shocking climax – a performance so intense that the production could only return for an extremely limited one month run in 2017, when this NT Live screening was filmed live.

NT Live - Angels in America - Part 1 : Millennium Approaches

Director: Marianne Elliott
Cast: Andrew Garfield
Playwright: Tony Kushner
Language: English (Chinese subtitles)
Duration: 225 mins

America in the mid-1980s. In the midst of the AIDS crisis and a conservative Reagan administration, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell.

Angels in America is arguably one of the most important plays of recent decades. Spread over two parts, altogether more than seven hours long, Tony Kushner’s multi-award winning epic is funny, moving, sharp and insightful. This hugely imaginative exploration of love, pain, sickness, death, faith and politics resonates as much today as it did 25 years ago, when it premiered at London’s National Theatre between 1992 and 1993.

This sold-out revival is performed by an all-star ensemble of Hollywood and British theatre A-listers, led by Oscar-nominee Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man, Hacksaw Ridge) as Prior Walter, and featuring Denise Gough (Paula), James McArdle (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Russell Tovey (The History Boys) and Broadway veteran Nathan Lane (The Producers, The Birdcage).

This affirming, magical ode to the strength of humanity is directed by Olivier and Tony award winning director Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, War Horse).
