Music therapy is a research-based practice and profession conducted by accredited music therapists. It is proved to be effective in improving health and well-being and the quality of life for people of all ages and abilities.
The programme comprises the following elements:
- A panel discussion by registered music therapists and academia from Hong Kong and the UK on music therapy and its benefits, and how to become a music therapist
- A formal music therapy workshop by registered music therapists on group music-making and collaborative lyrics-writing
- A walk-in VR gaming session on interactive music gaming to synergise the stimulating effects of gameplay and well-being outcomes of music listening
ABOUT SPEAKERS
Claire Molyneux is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for MA Music Therapy and MA Dramatherapy at Anglia Ruskin University. She is a registered music therapist with over 20 years’ experience working with children, young people and adults with diverse needs, and currently divides her time between teaching, research, clinical work and clinical supervision. She is a member of Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research (CIMTR).
Cheung Kit Yang Carol holds a Master of Arts in Music Therapy from Anglia Ruskin University, graduating in 2012. She is currently the chair of the Hong Kong Music Therapy Association and is dedicated to advancing the field of music therapy in the region.
Apart from running her own practice, Carol has worked at various hospital settings, including Queen Mary Hospital, where she provided music therapy services to cancer patients. In addition to her clinical work, she has trained midwives on integrating music into prenatal and postnatal support.
Carol has also conducted two pilot studies focusing on the effects of music therapy on cancer patients and the impact of lullaby singing on postnatal mothers, measuring outcomes related to stress, anxiety, and depression. Her commitment to using music as a therapeutic tool aims to improve the emotional well-being of her clients and enhance their quality of life.
Wong Wing Sang holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Master of Music Therapy from the University of Queensland, Australia. She is a board member of the Hong Kong Music Therapy Association and is a supervisor at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She is also a Neurologic Music Therapist. Wong has been a guest lecturer at The Nethersole School of Nursing at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, sharing her expertise in music therapy with future healthcare professionals.
Passionate about working with older adults, Wong specializes in supporting clients diagnosed with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, depression, and schizophrenia and etc. Her therapeutic approach emphasizes providing emotional support, maintaining cognitive and physical functions, and enhancing social relationships to improve the overall quality of life for her clients. Through her compassionate and evidence-based practice, Wong is dedicated to empowering individuals to discover joy and meaning in their lives, utilizing music as a powerful tool for healing and connection.
Tam Mei Po, Phyllis holds a Bachelor of Education from Hong Kong Baptist University and Master of Creative Music Therapy from Western Sydney University, Australia. Her training was mainly focused on Nordoff Robbins Approach. She is a registered teacher from Hong Kong Education Bureau as well as a registered music therapist from Australian Music Therapy Association. She is a Board member of Hong Kong Music Therapy.
Phyllis has been working with people with intellectual disability and children (aged 3-11) with special educational needs since 2012 after she graduated as a music therapist. She has the passion to use music as a medium to help people with special needs in order to help them to express themselves in a nonverbal way and to regulate their emotions in a positive way by doing improvisation or music ensembles. She also sets therapeutic goals for clients and through using musical games to help clients to achieve those goals to enhance growth and to improve their quality of life.
