Phillips auction house has joined hands with the British Council to create a unique programme, Neon Spark, to bring alive the iconic Hong Kong art of neon sign making.
An auction house unbound from conventions, Phillips has sponsored the creation of Neon Spark, an artwork conceived and designed by Faye Wei Wei - a British Chinese artist named ‘One to Watch’ by British Vogue in 2018. The artwork has then been fabricated by one of the last Hong Kong neon light masters. Neon Spark highlights a sunset industry which once illuminated and defined Hong Kong’s skyline, with the aim of igniting a conversation on preserving heritage and culture in the city, while providing an inspirational platform for cross-cultural creativity. It will be exhibited at Tai Kwun for the duration of SPARK.
British painter Faye Wei Wei graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2016, and has gone on to exhibit internationally. Her bold, poetic works quiver with a lively, lyrical motion, combining classical poise with vibrant immediacy.
After SPARK, the Neon Spark artwork will be displayed at the British Council in Hong Kong, where Phillips will hold a charity auction later in the year. The proceeds of the auction will be donated to the British Council to support creative programmes to develop young talent.
