What would a new town design based on Hong Kong’s favourite places look like?
There is huge pressure for urban growth in Hong Kong with visions proposed by the government for reclaiming land from the sea and building on underutilised sites in the New Territories. Hong Kong has been building new towns for generations, but many of these have been criticised for being dull and unimaginative environments that are a world away from the vibrant city identity that is synonymous with Hong Kong.
HASSELL in partnership with the Chinese University of Hong Kong, AD+RG, Purcell and BuroHappold, will go out on the streets across Hong Kong and ask people: what are your favourite Hong Kong places and why? This on-the-ground research will then be collated to explore a vision for what an expanded Hong Kong with a town for one million people could look like. The findings will form the basis of this panel debate, with participation from industry experts, student representatives and the audience, showcasing the places that people love, the spaces that give Hong Kong its unique character.
